Kedge Keep SHM / SK / NEC - 42

Testing whether Kedge Keep is worth levelling in at 42. It reportedly has no experience penalty, and it still is not worth the effort. Ends with three mermaids and a scramble for air.

Not a clear so much as an evaluation. Kedge Keep was said in the patch notes to carry no experience penalty, so the question is whether it is a viable place to level at 42. I go in on a first playthrough with no planar gear, get lost repeatedly, lose to three mermaids at the far end, and come out with a firm answer: the experience does not justify the effort.

Kedge Keep SHM / SK / NEC Level 42 Difficulty 1
Experience1.5 to 2.4% a kill
Looking for4% a kill, as I remember Guk
RequiredEnduring Breath, no exceptions
VerdictNot worth the effort

Before You Go

One hard requirement, and a difficulty worth choosing deliberately.

  • You need Enduring Breath. This is an underwater zone and there is no way around it. I run Dead Man Floating, but get the Enduring Breath earring instead, which I had not done.
  • In through Butcherblock Mountains, then down. The Estate of Unrest sits right outside on the water, which is the landmark to orient on.
  • Make an instance at difficulty one while levelling. Two reasons: nothing runs, and the mote chance is better. Higher tiers come once the gear does.
  • The pet is not worth it here. Mine died in the opening minutes to a pull I did not see coming, and I left it dead rather than recast, because it causes more problems than it solves until there is somewhere better to park it.

Dying here has a second cost. You respawn underwater without the mana to recast Dead Man Floating, so there is a real chance of drowning before it lands. That is how the run ends, sitting there waiting on one more mana tick.

The Zone Fights You

Before the mobs do.

  • Moving in three dimensions is genuinely disorienting. I spun around so many times I lost track of which way I was facing, and the map does not help as much as it should.
  • The layout is full of side rooms that lead nowhere, so exploring costs time you are not paid for.
  • The fish stun constantly, which is the real difficulty rather than their damage.
  • Auto attack switches itself to ranged down here, which is a situational problem worth watching for.

What Lives Here

Fish, then things that fight back.

  • Level 32 fish at the entrance, rising to sharks and hammerheads through the middle.
  • Cauldron sharks around 41 con even at 42.
  • Mermaids at the far end are the real content: a ranger at 44, an indifferent one at 50 I left alone, and a druid at 51.
  • The mermaid casters are the wall. Greater healing plus blind, and three at once emptied my mana. An 800 damage Harm Touch did nothing visible to one of them.
  • Phinigel Autropos does not spawn in the instance. The room is still there through the cube, but I have never bothered killing him on Legends, because he drops nothing of value.
  • Trash loot is vendor fodder: swordfish bills, shark skins, seahorse scales and shark meat, all straight to auto sell or the depot. Shark bones are a quest item and still went to the vendor.

Hitting 42 Mid Run

One upgrade worth taking immediately.

  • Alacrity replaces Quickness as the haste buff. It runs nine minutes, which lines it up with the quick buff cycle, and is still not long enough.
  • Arcane Mastery is worth the stance swap. It cut the big heal from a six second cast to 4.2, which in a stun-heavy zone is the difference between landing it and not.
  • The heal ticks 200, enough to top off between pulls without a dedicated healer in the loadout.

The Verdict, and the Wider Argument

Not just grading one zone.

  • 1.5 to 2.4% a kill against the 4% I remember from Guk, for noticeably more effort per pull.
  • The patch notes said this zone has no modifier, so if it is still this slow, the baseline is the problem rather than Kedge Keep. Worth going back to check whether Guk has been nerfed since.
  • More work than Guk and more work than Sol B, which are the direct comparisons.
  • The broader case: experience should be faster across the board, because you are not levelling one character, you are levelling sixteen personas to max things out, and this rate makes that unfun.
  • Below any TLP or live server, and the private beta rate was right for the game this is. The 1 to 49 stretch in particular is less optimal than it should be.
  • This is an opinion and I want the argument. Other people find different things fun, and I would rather hear the disagreement than have it treated as settled.

Hello and welcome to EverQuest Legends pre-order beta. That’s what it’s called. Uh today we’re outside of Kenge Keep and we’re going to do Kge today. So if you want to know how to get here, you come in through Butcher Block Mountains. You run down this little thing here. Boom, you’re there. Um the State of Unrest is right outside on the ocean. You do need enduring breath, and I recommend you get the enduring breath earring, which I did not get, but I recommend it. I’m using dead man floating for my uh enduring breath. Well, let’s zone in and create an instance and uh whatnot. So, let’s see here. Create instance. And I do a one uh when I’m leveling so that the mobs don’t run. And uh we get a bit higher chance on moes. As I get more gear, I’ll probably do twos and threes and fours. Uh but this is still my first playthrough on the pre-order beta, so I don’t have I don’t have any planer gear to make it easy for me right now. Now, from what I understand, this zone has no nerfed experience rates, and uh it should in theory be decent experience. Uh but we’re going to see we’re going to see uh kind of what I’m looking for is decent place to level, right? So, right here at the beginning, level 32 fish. We’re just going to pull it, kill everything that comes. Uh this zone is kind of cancer when it comes to moving around because it is water. So uh we’ll see here. And uh see here 32 mob 41.5 swordfish bill looks like junk auto cell. All right, let’s swim up a little bit. And let’s see here. So you can go uh there’s a yellow down there. Con him. Oh jeez. What the hell did I do? [laughter] Oh my gosh. All right. Might be dead here in the first few minutes. My pet is dead. Dead though. There’s no There’s no saving him, I don’t think. Even if I click on him. Yeah, he’s dead. All right. Well, you you did your job. Kept them off me for long enough to get at least one dot off. I can’t I can’t cast anything. I did not expect to get that many mobs on me, but here we are. All right. Three. I don’t know what that’s for. All right. Fresh fresh. We want that. I think I think that’s for like we use enduring for the other enduring breath spell. But dot on you and a dot on you and we’ll go back to you since you your dot wore off. So we got.1.5.8% And the yellow one is the one I’m curious about. 4.3.1 or 1 point 1.8 for the yellow. All right. So, we want to autoloop those and auto store those. [snorts] There we go. [laughter] Jeez. All right. I’ll I’m going to go without the pet because the pet is just going to uh cause me more issues than I probably would like right now until we find a better place. So, let’s go up here. Trying to remember. Like, I haven’t been I haven’t been here in a while, so I’m trying to remember. the pathway. Zoom in. Uh, filter Z first floor. Maybe it’s down. Maybe I’m mistaken here. Let’s go down like this. Yeah, this is where we went. All right, we’re getting attacked by a bunch of fish. We got two point 2.1 for one of those guys. These are very stunning mobs. Very, very stunning. Now we hit 42. Do we get anything? Uh, anything worth changing? Slugs healing. Elacrity. That’s a good one. All right. Elacarity is our new haste. So, which should actually last as long as quick buff now, so that’ll be good. All right. Uh, quickness. Change that to elacrity. Yeah, I don’t think I’m going to take that off. We’re going to pop in recovery real quick. Definitely. Uh I mean, not too bad. Like like for the amount of effort that I’m spending here, probably not worth it. Um like this is more work than doing guck, more work than doing soulby. So quick buff and elacrity is 9 minutes. Still not long enough. Uh let’s see here. We want to go right here and get more aggro. See now am I not weird that it is auto switching to range? Auto switch range. Okay, that’s definitely a situational problem there. spell damage. All right, shark skins. I don’t know what they’re for. Let’s auto sell them. There we go. All right, not too bad. One five for that guy. Now, we want to go behind us. In fact, the way down. Now, I don’t believe uh final spawns in this instance. So, it’s just fighting mobs, right? So, it’s not too bad. All right, we’re going to go down here and then down here. some point I’m going to get 100% lost, but we should be fine. [laughter] Should be fine. There’s a lot of different little places you can go off in these little side, you know, side areas. Looks like there’s some yellow mermaids and stuff. That’s kind of where I want to get. See if we can get some decent experience off those. I’m looking for like four uh at least 4% a kill is what I’m looking for. I’m looking for a good number because that’s what I remember I was getting in Guck. Um so unless that’s been nerfed, but uh definitely uh hoping hoping to get that. These are uh these are lesser mobs, so they’re probably not worth the effort. All right, so we can go this way. It’ll take us to the cauldron, maybe. Or if I go this way, frenzy room. All right, let’s try this. Can I open this gate? There we go. Navigating is uh weird on this map in 3D. There’s a cauldron shark. Okay, he’s a level 41, so he is he was an even con, so he’s going to be a higher level mob. There we go. We got a hammerhead. See, we can shift around there. Now, where does this where does this give us that we can go? I don’t really see much there. This one’s only 37. I don’t even know where this yellow dude came from. I didn’t even see him before. Maybe there’s like something above that I didn’t see. Let’s get a second dot on him. Go to the second guy. We’re going to life tap him. There we go. That’ll help us get our health back a little bit. There we go. Excellent. All right. So, this guy’s going to need another little dot. Surprised that like the fire even lands, right? like it should be like immune to fire to these these these these water mobs, right? Like I think that would have been a funny uh funny interaction, but here we are. And we get shark bones, which is a quest item. I’ll just sell it to the vendor. All right, looks like nothing up there. All right, let’s go. Is this anything? So, this Let’s go first person so we can navigate this little. Oh, this is the this is the way to finagle right here. [cheering] All right, we got warrior dotted. This thing’s a cleric. I don’t feel it’s going to be fun, but So, through that cube will take you to the room where Finnle is, right? So, uh he doesn’t spawn in this instance, but uh if he did spawn, that’s where you’d go to get him. I don’t know where this uh I have not I’ve never killed him on the legends because he’s like drops nothing of value, right? But uh definitely a thing there. Seahorse scales auto store. Let’s try to get some health back here. [screaming] So we got8 or 1.8 8 for one of those guys, 2.3 for something else, 1.9 for something else. So, I mean, we’re getting experience, but is it worth the amount of effort that we’re putting into this? Probably not. Definitely. Probably not. We get ranger this time. Shark meat. We can go ahead and auto store that probably put he’s double dotted us and let’s go ahead and do nonchalant. I might switch to the new snare version because it’s going to heal for more and being in the water being snared probably not bad. So, let’s go ahead and do that. Yeah, it’s like 12 levels between heels there. All right, let’s go ahead and save this so I have it memorized. All right. So, what’s in this room? Nothing. Okay. Now, the the things in final’s room are all like terrible mobs, so they’re like clerics and stuff, so I don’t really want to fight those. Uh, nothing in this room either. All right. If we go this way, go up, that takes us back there. Is there another up? No. So, we can go back down here and go down here. Oh, wait, wait, wait. There’s another back way. There’s a back door. Where’s this taking me? I’ve spun around so many times. I don’t know which direction I was going. This looks different. [laughter] There we go. All right. This is where we want to be. So, we got a level 44 ranger mermaid. Am I getting the red one, too? I don’t know. There we go. All right. So, we’re going to throw another dot on her. Let’s put slug on us. Oh my god, that is like the longest cast time in the world. Definitely uh worth uh worth upgrading that one. What does that heal for? 200 a tick. All right. So, it’s not too bad. It’s going to get us get us full. That’s all we need really. Let’s go back to Arcane Mastery cuz that’s going to cut that cast time down. Right. That was 6 seconds. Now, it’s 4.2. So, we have two mana. Did I do mental clarity? No, I didn’t do I was going to do mental clarity three and then I blew it on the stun. So, come on. So, 2.3 1x9. Let’s see what this one gives here. We ever kill her. If we ever kill her. There we go. 2.4. All right. What level are you? You’re indifferent and you’re level 50. All right, we’re not going to we’re not going to tussle with you. All right. I don’t know what just happened, but uh we got three mermaids on us and I can’t tab target them. All right, we’re going to go into life taps to try to stay alive here till I can get slug on. Let’s go for slug. That should work. All right, it landed. Now she’s a level 51 druid. She’s slowed. She’s dotted. And she’s dotted. All right, everybody’s dotted. Let’s target the red one and life type her down. Let’s get slug on again. Lovely. That gives us that gives us an extra 200 per tick. Right. Right. So, ah, we have plenty of extra resources there. Now, these things are not dying. [laughter] This is a ranger. This is a druid, right? So, oh god, we’re out of mana. Let’s go into recovery. Like, they must Yeah, they’re greater. The druid’s greater healing than that one’s a druid, too. So, they’re going to run out of mana shortly, though. So, and they blind, right? Like, like I I was making the joke about the druid heal blinding, but here we go. Here’s druids and blind, right? Like it’s it’s it’s a thing. I think it should happen. Or, you know, alternatively, healing spells have no negative, right? I mean, pick your, you know, pick your uh choice there. All right, I got that off before she she got me again. Let’s harm touch her. Just it did [laughter] nothing. 800 damage did nothing to this lady. Yeah, I I I’m not going to have the resources to fight this. This is just too much. There we go. We got pro the life tap on it. I think if I could kill one of them maybe like, >> but I’m just not regenerating mana fast enough right now. Oh well, I think that’s fitting, right? Like there’s there’s not much else to the stone other than this. some other sharks and [laughter] stuff, but this is this is where I wanted to get. These are these are the higher level uh things, but drain spirit. I’m at 300 health. You can see it’s definitely uh the end of the road here. Yeah. [laughter] So, we res respawn here. We’re going to drown because we don’t have enough mana to cast uh dead man floating yet. Takes one more mana tick and all right. So, kege keep. Uh I don’t need to do any more than this. Like it just doesn’t feel as good or as fun as uh you know other zones. So, it is what it is, right? like I feel like the experience is too low. Uh they said in the patch notes a few patches ago that there was no modifier to this zone and it was still, you know, a good zone. And I need to go look at, you know, Gawk and, you know, see if they nerfed that some more. But I feel like the experience here is not good enough for the amount of effort it takes to successfully do this zone. Uh especially on your first playthrough. Uh definitely I feel like personally experience across the board should be increased but uh you know everybody’s got their opinion on that. I feel like the experience we had in the private beta was perfect for the style of game this is. Uh this experience is less than what you would get on uh any TLP or live server. It is just absolutely abysmal and uh it’s actually kind of boring. uh in some places. But that’s just my opinion. I mean I mean other people have their opinions on what they think is fun and what is not, but uh I am definitely of the opinion that this is too slow for for this style of game. Um because you’re not leveling one character, you’re leveling 16 to, you know, max out your stuff. and leveling 16 personas at this slow a rate is going to be a little unfun in my opinion. But uh you know, let me know what you think. I don’t you know, I’d love to hear what whatever other one think everyone else thinks. I feel like a little bit faster is the key to success here. uh to make it a little bit more fun considering the other grinds that exist in this game and the content from 1 to 49 is less optimal than uh it should be for certain things. But yeah, so uh there we go. That’s Keep. Uh the experience is uh is okay. Not that great. It’s okay. But thank you very much for watching and please have a fantastic day.
